Chapter 5: Believe in Your Power to Coach

Being a better coach means setting aside the need to be an individual contributor. It means leaving behind the control and status of management to focus on being the leader of the team. With a coaching mindset, your focus is to enable the team and each individual team member to grow to their full potential. That’s your most important contribution.

Coach the Person, Not the Problem

When you’re playing football, to play well you need to keep your eye on the ball. Where the ball is and what’s happening to it helps you identify what the next play should be. In coaching, keeping your eye on the ball translates to keeping your eye on the person, not their problem.

Coaching is not about solving someone’s problem for them but helping them to be able to solve their own problems. First, when you coach, you need to understand the person’s context (see Figure 5.1). You need to hear how they construct and make sense of their problem.
